Scholarships for Language Exchange Programs (2026/2027)

In 2026, language exchange scholarships will be called “Global Competency” awards. These programs put a lot of emphasis on immersive experiences, like living with a host family and attending school in the area. This way, you “exchange” your culture for theirs while learning a new language.

1. Fully Funded High School Exchange Scholarships

These are highly regarded “Full-Ride” programmes that the government pays for. They cover everything from plane tickets to monthly spending money.

  • Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES)
    • Status for 2026/2027: The cycles for hiring are different in each country. Preliminary applications for the 2027 intake open in late 2026 for many places around the world, such as Jordan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
    • The Deal: high school students from countries with large Muslim populations can spend a whole school year in the U.S.
    • Value: 100% of the costs are covered, including placement with a host family, school, and a monthly allowance.
  • The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX)
    • Due date: Usually December 2026 (for the school year 2027/28).
    • The Deal: A diplomatic agreement between the U.S. and Germany.
    • Value: A full-year scholarship for motivated students to live in Germany, learn the language, and be “youth ambassadors.”. You don’t need to know any German beforehand.
  • NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth)
    • The next cycle will start in September 2026, when applications for the summer of 2027 and the school year 2027/28 will be accepted.
    • The Deal: High school students in the U.S. will learn “critical” languages like Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Russian, and others by living in another country.

2. Global Non-Profit Exchange Grants

AFS and YFU are two organisations that give out partial to full scholarships based on merit and need.

  • Scholarships for Global Citizens from AFS-USA
    • Due dates for 2027:
      • Programs will start early in 2027, on July 1, 2026.
      • Programmes for Fall 2027 start on December 1, 2026.
      • Short programmes for Summer 2027: March 1, 2027.
    • The Deal: Need-based and merit-based help for year, semester, or summer exchange programmes in more than 40 countries.
  • YFU (Youth For Understanding) Legacy and Money Help
    • Status: OPEN for enrolment in the years 2026 and 2027.
    • The Deal: Gives out more than $1.6 million in scholarships every year.
    • 2026 Special Important: Any student whose family has hosted or participated in a YFU exchange can apply for the YFU Legacy Grant ($1,000).

3. Professional and Specialised Exchanges

  • Belgium: ICP Connect Study Scholarships
    • The deadline depends on the programme, but it is usually February 28, 2026, with a start date in September 2026.
    • The Deal: Students from 29 eligible countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America can get full scholarships to study in Belgium.
    • Language: Most of the programmes are in English, but they offer a unique European exchange setting with opportunities to learn French or Dutch.
  • Darmasiswa Scholarship (for students from Indonesia)
    • Status: Every year (check the portal in early 2027).
    • The deal is a one-year exchange without a degree to learn about Indonesian language, arts, and culture.
    • Who can apply: Anyone from outside the US who is 18 to 27 years old.

4. Plan for Applying in 2026

  • The “Ambassador” Mindset: In 2026, exchange scholarship boards will be looking for “Cultural Mediators”. Instead of just saying what you want to “get” from the host community, talk about how you will share your culture (food, music, traditions) with them in your essay.
  • NIN and Documents: Make sure your NIN is in digital form if you are applying from West Africa. 2026 exchange portals for programmes like YES or AFS use national ID data to make it easier to check student records and see if they are old enough to participate.
  • Health and Flexibility: Applicants for 2026 need to get a “Health Certificate” early on. Be ready to be flexible about where you live; people who are willing to live in “non-metropolitan” areas often have a 30% higher selection rate.

Final Thoughts

If you want to plan for 2027 right away, set July 1, 2026, as the deadline for early AFS exchange cycles. If you are a high school student in a YES country that is eligible, start looking for the next recruitment call on your local embassy’s website in August 2026.
