Youth Exchange Programme Scholarships (2026/2027)

In 2026, more and more youth exchange scholarships are focused on diplomacy, STEM, and sustainable development. These “full-ride” programmes pay for everything, including international airfare, host family placement, schooling, and a monthly allowance. This makes sure that everyone can take part in leadership opportunities, no matter how much money they have.

1. Fully Funded Top “Full-Ride” Exchanges (for the 2027 school year)

The U.S. Department of State and other governments pay for these programmes. They are the most prestigious and sought-after awards for young people.

  • FLEX stands for Future Leaders Exchange.
    • The application window opens in August 2026 for the 2027/2028 school year.
    • The deal is that high school students from Europe and Eurasia can live with a host family and go to school in the U.S. for a year.
    • Status: Notifying the current 2026 finalists. If you are a student from a country that is eligible, like Ukraine, Kazakhstan, or Poland, you can apply for 2027 starting this August.
  • Kennedy-Lugar YES (Study and Exchange for Young People)
    • Recruitment Timeline: From September to December 2026, with the first intake in 2027.
    • The Deal: Only for students from countries with a lot of Muslims. It gives you a full academic year of immersion in the U.S.+1
    • Note: Some regional hiring was put on hold for 2026/2027, but the portal should open again in late 2026 for the 2027/2028 cycle.
  • CBYX stands for the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange.
    • The next deadline is December 2026, which is for the 2027–2028 school year.
    • The Deal: A diplomatic exchange between the U.S. and Germany. High school students, vocational school graduates, and young professionals can all join.
    • Value: a full scholarship that pays for all of your tuition, travel, and insurance. You don’t need to know German before.

2. Global Academies for Excellence and Leadership

These programmes often mix virtual collaboration with a powerful in-person exchange.

  • AFS Global STEM Academies and Accelerators
    • 2026 Deadlines: * STEM Accelerators: Applications were accepted until February 2026.
      • In late 2026, look for “Cohort 2” calls from STEM Academies.
    • The deal: full scholarships for young women and men who want to learn about technology and sustainability. Includes a virtual certificate programme and then a fully funded international exchange module.
  • AFS Youth Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland
    • August 12–14, 2026.
    • Deadline for scholarships: April 1, 2026 (the main session is now closed).
    • Applications usually open in late 2026 for the 2027 cycle.
    • The Deal: Partners like AstraZeneca and the Sir Cyril Taylor Foundation pay for young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa and other places to go to the global summit.

3. Exchanges for undergraduates and short-term students

  • UGRAD (Undergraduate Exchange Programme) around the world
    • The next time you can apply is from November 1, 2026, to December 15, 2026.
    • The Deal: Current undergraduate students can go to a U.S. university for one semester and have all of their expenses covered.
    • Target: New leaders from under-represented groups who still have at least one semester of school left after the programme.
  • Scholarships from MŠMT (Czech Republic)
    • Cycle: OPEN for 2026/2027.
    • The deal is that students from both countries can spend 2 to 10 months in the Czech Republic.
    • Value: It includes a monthly payment of CZK 12,000–13,000 and free tuition.

4. Checklist for Strategic Applications in 2026

  • NIN and Digital Identity: For applicants from West Africa, 2026 exchange portals (especially those sponsored by the U.S. government) use your NIN to automatically check your age and identity. Make sure your data is current before the August/September window.
  • The “Three Rounds” Rule: There are three tough rounds in programmes like FLEX and YES: an application, a proctored English test, and a semi-finalist interview with group activities. Start practicing your essay writing now, because reviewers in 2026 will be looking for very specific “Impact and Resilience” stories.
  • GPA Requirements: Most scholarships for youth exchange programmes require a GPA of at least 2.5 to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Make sure your transcripts for 2025 and 2026 are ready and, if necessary, translated into English.

Final Thoughts

August 2026 will be your busiest month for planning 2027. That’s when the FLEX and CBYX portals will be open. If you are an undergraduate right now, set a reminder for the Global UGRAD call on November 1.
