The Japan Foundation and the Japanese government (MEXT) are still the main sources of funding for international students in 2026. These scholarships are very generous; they often pay for 100% of tuition, round-trip airfare, and a monthly stipend that covers all living expenses.
1. The best fully funded government programmes (MEXT)
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) has several different options for you based on your current level of education.
- MEXT Scholarship for Japanese Studies
- Application Cycle: OPEN (Deadlines differ by embassy; usually from February to April 2026).
- The Deal: A one-year program for undergraduate students who are currently majoring in the Japanese language or culture outside of Japan.
- Value: Full tuition, round-trip airfare, and a monthly allowance of about ¥117,000.
- Requirement: Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and they must return to their home university to graduate after the program.
- Students at MEXT Specialised Training College
- April 8, 2026, is the deadline for the 2027 intake.
- The Deal: For high school graduates (ages 17–24) who want to earn a vocational “Associate Degree” in Japan.
- Language Component: Before starting the technical training (for example, in design, hotel management, or technology), you must take a one-year intensive Japanese language course.
- Value: Full ride, with a monthly stipend and airfare.
- MEXT Undergraduate and Research Students (2027)
- Expected Call: April to May 2026.
- The Deal: If you want to obtain a full degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) but your Japanese isn’t very good yet, MEXT will pay for you to study Japanese in Japan for 6 months to a year before your degree starts.
2. Grants from the Japan Foundation and JASSO
These programmes are often shorter or only for certain groups of professionals.
- Japan Foundation Programme for Cultural and Academic Experts
- Time frame: From October 2026 to March 2027.
- Status: The 2026 cycle application is now closed. The deadline was December 2025. Results will be announced in April 2026.
- The Deal: Made for librarians, researchers, and curators who need Japanese for their work.
- Benefit: Pays for all of your tuition and provides you a single room and meals in Japan.
- JASSO Short-Term Student Exchange Help
- Deadline: Different for each university (for many partners, it’s from May 1 to May 29, 2026).
- The Deal: Students who are taking part in an exchange programme between their home university and a Japanese partner school.
- Value: ¥80,000 a month.
- Important: Your home university’s International Office must nominate you.
3. Fellowships for specific areas
- JF Southeast Asia Partnership (JFSEAP)
- Cycle: Applications for the next cycle usually open in late 2026.
- The Deal: Aimed at students and researchers in ASEAN countries to help them share ideas and improve their language skills.
- The Bridging Scholarship (from the US to Japan)
- Due date: Early 2027 (for Fall 2027 intake).
- The Deal: U.S. college students can study abroad in Japan. The stipends are between $2,500 and $4,500.
4. Plan for Applying in 2026
- NIN and ID verification: If you’re applying from Nigeria, make sure your NIN is digital and matches the information on your passport. National identity APIs are often used for the first round of candidate filtering at embassies in 2026.
- The “Zero-IELTS” Advantage: If you pass the embassy’s own English and Japanese written tests, you don’t need to take the IELTS for MEXT scholarships. You can locate sample tests for the 2026 cycle on the official “Study in Japan” website.
- JLPT Vouchers: Ask your local Japan Foundation office if they have any “Scholarship Seats” or vouchers for the July and December 2026 JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) for students who do well.
Final Thoughts
If you graduated from high school and want to work in a trade, you have until April 8 to apply for the Specialised Training College track. If you go to college, get in touch with your International Office right away to see if there are any JASSO exchange nominations for the Fall 2026 semester.
