Scholarships You Might Not Know About

It is Thursday, April 30, 2026. While everyone is chasing the “Big Three” (Chevening, Fulbright, and Mastercard), there are several high-value, niche awards that often fly under the radar due to their specific requirements or localised focus.

Here are some scholarships you probably never knew existed but should definitely consider as of today:

The Scholarship “Letter to the Number Five”

Closing date: 31 May 2026 This is an odd, very specific Creative Thinking award.

  • The Task: Write a letter to number five explaining why it’s important. 250 words or less.
  • Value: $1500.
  • Who can enter: Open to legal residents (14 years +) who are currently enrolled or planning to enrol in a post-secondary institution. It is the ultimate “Out of the Box” award for students with a sense of humour.

Spärck AI Scholarship – University of Manchester

Deadline: Operational for the 2026 admission season (refer to the portal for particular course-linked periods) A brand new, ultra-modern award for the tech-crazed.

  • Value: Fully Funded Master’s Scholarship.
  • FocusCreated specifically for “Future AI Leaders”. This is a niche route for African students seeking to bridge the gap between Ethics, Data Science and global AI governance at one of the top research universities in the UK.

African Excellence Award – University of Glasgow

Value: 100% Tuition Fee Waiver

  • Status: Interviews for the current cycle take place in May 2026.
  • The Obscurity: This award is a “Future World Changers” grant specifically for African students in any master’s discipline, unlike the general “International Scholar” awards. The March deadline is gone, but this award is the #1 “hidden gem” to put on your radar for the 2027 cycle opening later this year.

Rover Scholarship – The “Pet Impact” Award

Closing date: 1st May 2026 (only 24 hours to go!)

  • The Task: Write a 400-500 word essay on how having a pet while growing up affected who you are today.
  • Value: $2,500.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. If you are a student in the United States or studying at a U.S. institution, this scholarship is a fast, earnest way to get funding.

Postgraduate Scholarships: Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE)

Status: Open for 2026/2027 Cycle

  • The Obscurity: PTDF is quite well known, but those outside the ‘Oil & Gas’ bubble often miss the NAE awards.
  • TARGET: Nigerian students from all the states of the Federation for postgraduate studies.
  • Check the Scholastica portal today for available spots in your state’s quota.

Strategy for “Hidden” Scholarships

  1. Look up “Oddity”: On sites such as Bold.org, search for keywords like “Unusual,” “Niche,” or “Identity-based.” Most of the awards are funded by individuals (e.g., the Gary Imm Astronomy Scholarship, $6,000) and not large corporations.
  2. Institutional-Specific Grants: Many universities have “Talent Scholarships” (e.g., the Southampton Ageing and Gerontology Talent Scholarship), which only take a handful of applicants due to the very specific subject.
  3. Video Contests Content creators may want to consider the HelloNation Student Video Contest ($10,000, deadline June 1). Most students hate being on camera, which means much less competition for you.

Tonight (April 30) Reminder: The University of Southampton GREAT Scholarship for Nigerians closes today at 5:00 PM UK Time. It is one of the few institutional “GREAT” awards targeting specifically “Ambassadors” for Higher Education.
